MQR reads submissions year round.
Writers are advised to inspect a back copy of the Michigan Quarterly Review (available for $4.00) or our archives before submitting work. Average turnaround time is six weeks.
Fiction and essay: Manuscripts should be double-spaced, right margins not justified. 1,500 words minimum, 5,000 average, 7,000 maximum.
Poetry: Submissions, whether of one poem or several, should not exceed a total of eight to twelve pages.
Submissions by e-mail or fax cannot be accepted and will not be read. If a manuscript is accepted for publication, we will ask for an electronic version (please make sure that we have your e-mail address). People wishing to submit from countries without reliable mail service may e-mail us for permission to send electronic submissions.
Simultaneous submissions are allowed.
A self-addressed, stamped envelope must be enclosed for the return of the manuscript or for any reply. Authors who would like their manuscripts returned to them must include an envelope with sufficient postage and indicate in a cover letter that they want the manuscript returned. Manuscript pages are recycled unless the author has made it clear that they should be returned.
